AUTECHRE // sign

Evoking a return to a form of classicism may seem ironic when discussing the Manchester duo, who have, let's admit it, long since cast off anything that might resemble possible moorings.

Yet, it is clear: this fourteenth Autechre album is nonetheless very far from their previous digressions. To question whether this is a renunciation of abstraction, even a temporary one, would be just as fallacious.

Autechre advances without being accountable to anyone. With a constantly mutating DNA, Rob Brown and Sean Booth have, however, given up one thing: the seductive compromise sometimes required (and established) by a certain IDM tribe that chooses to shine at downtown cocktail parties and gallery openings.

What to say, without a scalpel autopsy, about this album, if not the joy of many moments? This includes "si00", which seems momentarily to return from a past, or the equally ceremonious "esc desc"—and the list is not exhaustive.

A document of a possible learning (Metazform8) for newcomers, SIGN also deserves our attention for the same reason that one day, you and I, I hope, first lent our ears to "kalpol introl," being certain that there was an 'before' and an 'after' that moment.
