KRATZWERK // T o y o t a

A Scent of the End of the World. Flickering monitors, halos of a declining retro-futurism in Trinitron ultraviolets, a thick cathodic molasses—T O Y O T A ! The commercials, or more precisely, the masterful artifacts of Kratzwerk (aka Guido Richter), are far from eliciting the usual polite chuckle reserved for awkwardness or general misunderstanding, or the illusory camaraderie of hipsters, those servile stereotypes. The warning was unequivocal, and so will be the enslavement.

The once-bright future now seems to be conjugated in the imperfect of disaster. The promise? A postcard from Shell Beach (Jennifer) under the sun of Bikini or Mururoa (take your pick). The cosmetic thrill of the gear shift—an illusion—a head-on collision turned into a cloud of luminous shards. Intentional, on the part of the ever-perceptive Kraftzwerk, T O Y O T A imparts a form of very relative passivity: morbid consumers overwhelmed by hepatic and ocular overdose.

A game of appearances and suspicion, this work harbors a few pitfalls (CM 11), discreet gems hidden within the heart of a labyrinth. If it is polite to be cheerful on the edge of a precipice, then let us dance in the fully loaded, leather-interior version.
