I came to live here because I married an Indonesian woman. It is a very good place to be poor, almost everything is about an 8th of the price of things in England.
Let's talk about the new lp IN ALDERNEY Can you tell us more about the genesis of this album ?
It began like quite a few of my albums from an image. Then came the name.

Almost always I choose what atmosphere that I want to create, then often comes the name of the album, and then I find an image, if I haven't found one yet.
Can we say that Alderney (channel islands) is just a pretext or maybe a dreamy destination ?
Both - I have been to Jersey about 40 years ago, but I don't remember anything.
The album is constructed around 7 distinctive sequences - can you precise us your process from the image to the sounds ?

In the last few months my work has developed into more and more long form tracks, with the idea of me and the listeners being totally immersed in the sounds, and creating hypnotic states
You are very productive and your sound production is constant and becomes immense, what is your point of view on this situation ?
I find it mentally healthy, I am a very creative person, and making things, whether music, art or writing, these things are my oxygen, I can't exist without creating things, about 6 days a week
I would drown in a black emptiness if I did none of these arts
I have no "job" so time is all mine

Yes, from age 11 reading Orwell at school I developed a love of philosophy and literature. I dropped out of school at 16, worked in factories, a pub and then at 19 I did a year's course for drop outs, and then studied a BA in philosophy and literature. about half way into the 2nd year I dropped the major in philosophy before they made me read Kant and Hegel. I wanted to study the Existentialists and Heidegger and Nietzsche and Wittgenstein. After leaving the university I read more and more literature, particularly Russian literature.

Can you tell us more about your "insanbient" concept ?
Put simply it is the idea of creating an Ambient rationalist backdrop with irrational themes and sounds interspersing with the Ambience..
A lesser known facet of your musical personality, you pursue a total fascination for dub, to the point of having an activity within the Pillars of Dub / What is your view on Dub & other musical genres?
Dub is the rhythm of life, my heartbeat, my pulse. After listenening to it and seeing many reggae bands in London I formed a reggae / dub band at university, it was short lived, I don't know why. Fast forward about 20 years later, I conceived and formed a dub duo with my eldest son, the name I came up with represents the bass guitar and the snare drum, which are the pillars of dub. We spent almost a year recording and mixing the album. Later we toured with an alto saxophonist. Other musical genres ? You have no space here for me to discuss that. Suffice to say my musical preferences are very eclectic.

Bonsoir thierry, il y a des hauts et des bas. Disons tout de suite que je souffre de troubles bipolaires et de dépression clinique. Ces derniers jours ont été corrects, car, comme d'habitude, j'ai été très productif.
Tu vis à Java, quelle est ta relation avec cet endroit ?
Je suis venu vivre ici parce que j'ai épousé une femme indonésienne. C'est un très bon endroit pour être pauvre, presque tout coûte environ un huitième du prix des choses en Angleterre.
Parlons du nouvel album IN ALDERNEY. Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur la genèse de cet album ?
Il a commencé comme pas mal de mes albums, à partir d'une image. Ensuite, le nom est venu.
Je décide ensuite du sentiment global de l'album, des concepts intuitifs.
Les images sont-elles toujours un point de départ ?
Presque toujours, je choisis l'atmosphère que je veux créer, puis le nom de l'album arrive souvent. Ensuite, je trouve une image, si je n'en ai pas déjà trouvé une.
Peut-on dire qu'Alderney (îles Anglo-Normandes) est juste un prétexte ou peut-être une destination rêvée ?
Les deux – Je suis allé à Jersey il y a environ 40 ans, mais je ne me souviens de rien.

C'est pratiquement impossible. Mais on pourrait dire que le ressenti de l'image et du titre sert de tremplin pour plonger dans le monde sonore.
Avec IN ALDERNEY, le point éloigné d'une île en mer a aidé à cristalliser le concept musical.
En ce qui concerne un genre de référence possible pour l'album et les "archivistes sonores" ... Que penses-tu de cette définition : "drone ambient musique répétitive" ?
Au cours des derniers mois, mon travail s'est de plus en plus orienté vers des morceaux longs, avec l'idée que moi et les auditeurs soyons totalement immergés dans les sons, créant des états hypnotiques.
Tu es très productif et ta production sonore est constante et immense. Quel est ton point de vue sur cette situation ?
Je trouve cela mentalement sain. Je suis une personne très créative, et créer des choses, que ce soit de la musique, de l'art ou de l'écriture, c'est mon oxygène. Je ne peux pas exister sans créer, environ 6 jours par semaine.
Je sombrerais dans un vide noir si je ne faisais aucune de ces choses artistiques.
Je n'ai pas de "travail", donc tout mon temps m'appartient.

Oui, depuis l'âge de 11 ans, en lisant Orwell à l'école, j'ai développé un amour pour la philosophie et la littérature. J'ai quitté l'école à 16 ans, travaillé dans des usines, dans un pub, puis à 19 ans j'ai suivi une année de cours pour décrocheurs. Ensuite, j'ai étudié un BA en philosophie et littérature. Vers le milieu de ma deuxième année, j'ai abandonné la majeure en philosophie avant qu'ils ne me fassent lire Kant et Hegel. Je voulais étudier les existentialistes, Heidegger, Nietzsche et Wittgenstein. Après avoir quitté l'université, j'ai de plus en plus lu, notamment de la littérature russe.
Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur ton concept "insanbient" ?
Pour faire simple, c'est l'idée de créer une toile de fond ambient rationnelle avec des thèmes et des sons irrationnels qui s'y mêlent.
Une facette moins connue de ta personnalité musicale est ta fascination pour le dub, au point d'avoir une activité au sein des Pillars of Dub. Quel est ton point de vue sur le dub et d'autres genres musicaux ?
Le dub est le rythme de la vie, mon battement de cœur, mon pouls. Après l'avoir écouté et avoir vu de nombreux groupes de reggae à Londres, j'ai formé un groupe de reggae/dub à l'université, mais ça n'a pas duré, je ne sais pas pourquoi. Environ 20 ans plus tard, j'ai conçu et formé un duo de dub avec mon fils aîné. Le nom que j'ai trouvé représente la guitare basse et la caisse claire, qui sont les piliers du dub. Nous avons passé presque un an à enregistrer et mixer l'album. Plus tard, nous avons tourné avec un saxophoniste alto. D'autres genres musicaux ? Tu n'as pas assez de place ici pour que je puisse en parler. Disons simplement que mes préférences musicales sont très éclectiques.
