PINK FLOYD // at pompeii - MCMLXXII (2025 mix)


Unearthing, posthumously and for comparison’s sake, Adrian Maben’s 2003 director’s cut DVD was no easy task — Too young in 1972 when it was first released, onto something entirely different by the dawn of the new millennium, the mythical October 1971 concert with no audience, filmed among ruins, had probably been left as-is — A fatal mistake! This reissue, lavish in both presentation and price, deserves the kind of attention owed to this masterful band before it crashes upon the dark bricks of the lunar side in another story, one far less... psychedelic.
Even relying solely on the stereo audio version of this 2.25 combo, the immersion into a forgotten world is already beyond perfect, and we can safely assume that the multi-format atmospheric enhancements of Steven Wilson’s new mix reach a state of absolute cosmetic climax.
The more seasoned listeners will rightly rush to the monstrous intro of “One of These Days” and, since we’re in the company of Roger Waters, will follow with the chimeric scream of “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”; the others must absolutely start the journey at the beginning — January 1967 — “Arnold Layne had a strange hobby…”.


Déterrer à titre posthume et comparatif le "director's cut" d'Adrian Maben, un DVD de 2003, n'a pas été aisé - Trop jeune, à sa sortie en 1972, passé à tout autre chose au début d'un nouveau millénaire, le mythique concert sans public d'octobre 1971 dans les ruines était probablement tombé en l'état - Funeste erreur ! Cette réédition, au luxe et tarifs à l'avenant, mérite toute l'attention que l'on doit porter à ce groupe magistral avant qu'il ne vienne se fracasser sur les briques sombres de la face lunaire d'une autre histoire, nettement moins ... psychédélique.
Appuyé sur la seule écoute de la version audio stéréo de ce combo 2.25, l'immersion vers un monde oublié est déjà plus que parfaite et nous pouvons présager, sans trop nous tromper, que les rehaussements atmosphériques des supports multiples du nouveau mix de Steven Wilson atteignent un paroxysme cosmétique absolu. 
Les plus aguerris se précipiteront, avec justesse, sur la monstrueuse intro de "One of These Days" et, puisque nous sommes en compagnie de Roger Waters, enchaineront avec le hurlement chimérique de "Careful With That Axe, Eugene", les autres doivent impérativement reprendre l'aventure à son commencement - janvier 1967 - "Arnold Layne had a strange hobby ...".
